I am planning our first SQL BI Manager installation. We have virtualized our infrastructure and try hard to enforce a principle of horizontal scaling.
This makes me want to split the SQL BI Manager components and place them on their own dedicated server:
Is it possible to split the components like above?
We are also running SQLdm and I can see that the new version (9.0) also uses Idera Dashboard.
This gives the additional question: Can the Database Server also hold the SQLdm Repository?
The “complete” solution then requires four servers.
If there are different answers for SQLdm 8.6 and 9.0 I would really like to know.
If I miss some details then please let me know!
The configuration you propose should be fine, and, yes, the same database server would be able to host the SQL BI repository, the SQLdm repository, and the Dashboard/Core repository if you like.
One of the things that can be confusing in the current SQLdm documentation are references to SQLdm Mobile. That’s a completely different feature, unrelated to the Dashboard. If the goal is to get SQLdm in the dashboard, you can ignore any instructions that detail the SQLdm Mobile and/or Newsfeed components.
I think the biggest caveats would be to pick your dashboard server and install the dashboard first. After that, each of the applications has a step to register with an existing dashboard at the beginning of its wizard.
