KB: How to determine which version and edition of Java is installed?

To determine whether Java is installed properly:

  1. Select “Windows Desktop > Start”.
  2. In the “Start” menu, type “cmd.exe” or “Command Prompt” and select the “Command Prompt” entry.
  3. To determine whether Java is installed, in the “Command Prompt” window, enter:
    java.exe -version
  4. To determine whether the 64-bit edition of Java is installed, in the “Command Prompt” window, enter:
    java.exe -version -d64
  5. To determine whether the 32-bit edition of Java is installed, in the “Command Prompt” window, enter:
    java.exe -version -d32

The current version of Java is “Version 8” that corresponds to “Build 1.8”. For example, “Version 8 Update 101” corresponds to “Build 1.8.0_101”.
