KB: How to troubleshoot problems during the installation of free tools?

To troubleshoot problems during the installation of free tools:

  1. Select “Windows Desktop > Start”.
  2. In the “Start” menu, type “cmd.exe” or “Command Prompt”.
  3. Right-click on the “Command Prompt” entry and select from the pop-up menu the “Run as administrator” entry.
  4. Assuming that the installer is placed on the Desktop, type into the “Command Prompt” window.
    For example:
    cd C:\Users\{username}\Desktop\
    cd %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\
  5. Execute the Windows Installer by typing into the “Command Prompt” window:
    msiexec /i “{installer file name}” /L*vx install.txt
    For example:
    msiexec /i “Idera.SQL.Check.Setup (x64).msi” /L*vx install.txt
  6. After the installer completes (with or without error), it should save to the Windows Desktop a log file with the name “install.txt”.
  7. Double-click on the log file to view it in Windows Notepad.
  8. To send the log file to IDERA, refer to the post "How to send log files for free tools to IDERA?".
